How To Tune Drums

Thursday, May 5th, 2011

So many times I hear students tell me that they need a new snare drum or that  their toms are terrible. Sometimes it might be true but before they raid their  parent’s bank accounts I always offer to check out their existing drums. Often  it’s a simple case of a poorly tuned drum.

HEADS

If anything does need replacing, it is generally the drum head rather than  the drum. Heads reach a point where they are impossible to tune and this will  happen more quickly if you’re a hard hitter.

Drum Loops

Drum loops help create the “backbone” of music production, especially in rap beats. Using drum loops in beats and instrumentals might seem like “cheating”, but it is actually an effective way to start the beat making process. Many of the top earners in the music industry use drum loops. Famous music producers such as Timbaland, Cool and Dre, and Just Blaze are all producers who have used loops within their instrumentals. Drum loops are also an excellent way to prevent “beat block” (music producer’s version of writer’s block). Beat block happens when a producer experiences a lack of inspiration, drive, or desire to create music.

Royalty Free Music Loops and Samples

Some producers overlook royalty free music loops as way to expedite beat making, but veteran music creators know the power that music loops bring to the table. When using a piece of pre-composed music it automatically sets the mood for the rest of the instrumental. Using a music loop allows the beat maker to quickly build a music composition without wasting excessive time figuring out a melody for a track. (more…)

Americana Music History

According to the American Music Association, or AMA, it is a type of music which has American roots, but is infused with the traditions of country. “While its musical model can still be traced back to the Elvis Presley unity of ‘hillbilly music’ and RnB that gave birth to rock n roll, Americana as a radio format emerged in the 1990′s as an answer to the highly polished sound that dominated the mainstream music of the decade.
